WET WINTER HAS HELD UP ROAD WORK
MANUKAU COUNCIL MEETS Owing to the wet winter the Manukau County Council’s contractors on the Great South Road are not able to complete their contract. The council agreed this morning to pay out £2,822 to the' contractors on condition that they enter into a bond protecting it from any liability owing to having paid out more than the 75 per cent, which the contractors were entitled to until the work had been finished. The engineer reported that on the Papatoetoe-Manurewa section of the contract work was nearly completed with the exception of a short length of paving deferred at Wiri. On the Manurewa-Papakura section the contractors had only completion and consolidation of shoulders to carry out. The engineer reported on work being done in various ridings. The continued wet weather had made maintenance work a struggle. BUILDING FEE OF 10s The inspector reported that 19 applications for permits to build had been received and the value of the proposed buildings were £21,063. The inspector recommended that the council should charge a fee of 10s for every application to erect buildings worth from £lO up to £IOO. “If you are going to do that you will have the farmer down on you,” said a councillor, pleading for the exemption of small farm buildings. Bowsers had been erected without reference to the county inspector, who suggested that the council should write to the Minister of Internal Affairs suggesting that councils should take over the supervision of dangerous goods. The council decided to support the Auckland Suburban Local Bodies’ Heavj' Transport Association resolutions in favour of the repeal of the Motor Omnibus Traffic Act.
