CONTINUED COAL TAR PRODUCTS IMPORTANT RESEARCH VALUABLE WORK IN ENGLAND British Wireless—Press Assn Copyright New industrial developments in the Midlands of Britain are expected to result from researches which have been conducted for a period of three years in South Staffordshire by the Mond Gas Company, of Dudley Port. These researches have been aimed at a fuller exploitation of tar products. The company’s managing-director claims that a substance has been produced which is superior to creosote as a preservative and a protection against the ravages of the white ant and dry rot. Another discovery is that by blending different varieties of bitumen and by reducing them to a colloidal state, a paint can be obtained which will resist corrosion in Iron and steel. There is also a derivative which provides a powerful germicide. This is not poisonous and is a nen-irritant. it is claimed that it can be used for medical treatment and that It has great efficacy in reaching deep-seated mischief and in promoting the growth of new tissues. The raemebers o fthe research staff of the company believe' these discoveries are only the precursors of more important developments in the field of fine chemicals. In the meanwhile, an extension of manufacturing activities is promised.—A. and N.Z.
