EXCITING HOCKEY AT PAPATOETOE

Without doubt one of the best exhibitions of hockey yet seen at Papatoetoe was given on Saturday, whon the local team played a drawn game with Somerville, the leading team in the competitions. Play right through the game was very even, neither side being able to show any advantage, and no score eventuated during the first half. On opening in the second spell, some very hard exchanges took place, which called for some comment from the referee. Half-way through this spell F. E. Carr, playing for Papatoetoe, received a nasty hit on the head, and had to leave the field immediately after. Catt raced down the left wing and sent in a hard shot from the edge of the circle, but it was held on the goal-line by the mud, and McGovern raced up, and finding the goalkeeper out of position, scored. Play continued very -wen till one minute from time, when Somerville netted from a melee in front of Papatoetoe’s goal. No further scores eventuated. Mr. Nicholson, president of the Hockey Referees’ Association, controlled the game in his usual efficient manner.
