SAMOAN TURMOIL
SERIOUS TROUBLE UNLIKELY AUCKLANDER’S VIEWS “If a Commission had gone to Samoa instead of the Hon W. Nosworthy, the trouble would have been over long ago." This statement was made by a wellknown Aucklander who returned from a trip to Samoa yesterday by the Aorangi. “There are statements in R. L. Stevenson’s letters regarding Samoa which might have been written yesterday” he continued. “One of them relating to strong men to keep order among the natives is particularly appropriate. “People are talking a lot in Samoa” the Aucklander continued “but I do not think there will be any serious trouble. The average visitor to Samoa does not know what the trouble is about. “There is a feeling among the majority. that prohibition is responsible for getting the support of the whites against the Administration.” The Aucklander stated that the Samoan chiefs had never been famous for their ability to work amicably together. Even R.L.S. had discovered that.
