MAORI WAR VETERAN

MR. J. H. GRIFFITHS A very old identity in the person of Mr. J. H. Griffiths died at the Tauranga Hospital to-day at the age of 82. He was born in Heresford, England, and came to New Zealand when 19 years old. For a time he lived in North Auckland then went to Taranaki, taking part in the Maori War under Major Von Tempsky. He then joined the Ist Waikato Regiment and left that to join the armed constabulary, coming to Tauranga about 58 j r ear ago, where he was drill sergeant for a time. He joined the staff of the County Council and was clerk to that body for 35 years. He retired about five years ago. Mrs. Griffiths predeceased him six years ago. He leaves three sons and tv/o daughters.
