“ORDER! ORDER!”

HEAT IN THE HOUSE MR.. SULLIVAN ANGERED (THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter.') WELLINGTON, Friday. Heated words and a little display of feeling resulted from an exchange which Mr. D. Jones, Ellesmere, Had with Mr. JD. G. Sullivan, Avon, in the House of Representatives this evening. Mr. Jones, who is noted for his tenacity in attacking the Labour Party’s policy and the actions of its members, could not resist the opportunity of a thrust at Mr. Sullivan as chairman of the Finance Committee of the Christchurch City Council respecting the transfer of some moneys from one fund to another in order to balance the book 3. Mr. Jones first said that Mr. Sullivan had declared himself in favour of transferring some sinking fund money into another account. Mr. Sullivan: That is untrue. Mr. Speaker: Order. The lion, member will have to withdraw that. Mr. Sullivan: I withdraw and substitute the words “absolutely incorrect.” Mr. Jones went on and quoted from a newspaper report stating that the money was from the depreciation fund. Mr. Sullivan: You don’t know what you are talking about. It is monuntrue. Mr. Speaker: Order. The hon. member had no right to repeat that. Mr. Sullivan: I withdraw and say “incorrect.” Air. Jones: The hon. member will admit that he will take money from the depreciation fund. Mr. Sullivan: I deny it absolutely. Air. Jones: It is surplus revenue and is to be used by the City Council. Mr. Sullivan rose to make a personal explanation when Air. Jones finished. No such thing was contemplated, he said. No sinking fund or depreciation fund had been taken. Air. Jones: Not yet. Air. Sullivan: You use this for a purpose. You don’t know the meaning of the word honour. Air. Speaker: Order! Order! Air. Sullivan: It is difficult to deal with a man like that, Sir. Surplus funds, not required for any other purpose for the time being, were proposed to be used properly for other purposes in the council.
