Sir, — Your correspondent, “Aucklander’s” allusion to the case of the old man, as an exposition of the present acutely unfavourable condition of the labour market, the necessity of relief works and the nine shillings a day, is almost too ludicrous for comment' or criticism. If “N.Z.’s” letter denouncmg the hypocrisy of a Government that preaches a square deal and seizes the opportunity presented by the most tense state of unemployment that this country has experienced for a long time, to tender nine shillings to a large body of virile workers, is unfair and low-down propaganda, “Aucklander s perception of the right and wrong of things must be dismally foggy.
