EDUCATION BOARDS
CURTAILMENT OF POWER PROTEST FROM PONSONBY The suggested intention of the Government to curtail present powers of Education Boards was discussed at a recent meeting of the Ponsonby Schools’ Committee. As an outcome the following letter was forwarded to the Minister of Education, the Hon. R. A. Wright: “The suggested intention of the Government to curtail the powers of Education Boards was discussed at length, and it was felt that it was the bounden duty of the committee to voice a most emphatic protest against any such proposed action.” “Under our jurisdiction are four schools of a total roll number o*f 2,500 children, probably the greatest number of children controlled by any ‘ one School Committee in the Dominion. Thus in the carrying out of our duties we are constantly in contact and have frequent dealings with the Auckland Education Board. “We have alw-ays found that the board has disposed of all matters submitted to it with the utmost efficiency, and that it has been unfailing in courtesy; in short, that its administration of educational affairs has met with the absolute approval of us all. “We deem it our duty to protest against any interference by the Government with the powers of Education Boards as at present cQnstituted, which have rendered every satisfaction and the abolition of which, we consider, would lead to endless confusion, where, till the present, has existed the utmost harmony.”
