Irish Republicans Take Oath in Dail

POLITICAL CRISIS MR. COSGRAVE INJURED By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Thursday. Mr. de Valera and other Republicans took the oath of allegiance in the Dail to-day. They were introduced by Mr. T. Johnson (Labour leader) and Captain Redmond. President Cosgrave’s motor-car collided with a lorry. Mr. Cosgrave was badly cut, and wounds on his face had to be stitched. The Fianna Fail Party has issued a statement after its conference. This stated that the elected members had agreed to take the oath of allegiance after considering the position of national emergency created by the legislation now being pressed through the Dail. This legislation the party considered to be likely to imperil the general peace and to cause widespread suffering. “The declaration which the members of the party will sign does not. imply a contractual obligation,” continues the statements. “It is merely an empty political formula which the elected members will conscientiously sign without becoming involved in an obligation to be loyal to the English Crown. “The Fianna Fail would not wish to be debarred from exercising its public functions by an empty formula.” —A. and N.Z.-Sun.
