“DIRTY HOODLUMS”
CUSTODIANS’ COMPLAINTS The limit of swinish behaviour, on the part of a certain section of the public, has now been reached. Two complaints in two days have reached this newspaper from custodians of public conveniences relating to prevalent hoodlumism. “They drink and quarrel, they weigh themselves and each other and fight about the results, they break bottles on the floor and make pigs of themselves in every way.” That was the complaint of the custodian of the Beresford Street convenience, who called to complain of the behaviour of part of the public. “It’s usually younger men,” he said. "They are a disgusting mob on paynights. As soon as the hotels are closed they come here to barney and drink and when, we say anything to them they insult us with all the vile terms imaginable. The police do all they can to help us, but they can’t always be there. It’s the ‘push’ element that’s to blame.” The custodian of the Customs Street convenience also sent a note. “Dirty hoodlums” is how he described a section of frequenters. “If it was not for the police coming down four or five times every evening and rooting some people out. it would be pity help us. These hooligans have no respect for decency or for us who are in charge.”
