MR. AMERY ON TOUR
VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA PRAISE FOR DOMINIONS A HOPEFUL SPEECH By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright Reed. 9.20 a.m. CAPETOWN, Monday. Arriving at Capetown to-day, Mr. JL. S. Amery, Dominion Secretary, was; presented with a civic address of welcome, which made a strong point in acknowledging South Africa’s debt to the protection given by the British Navy. Replying, Mr. Amery said the purpose of the South African visit was the maintenance of personal contact between the Governments and the Dominions, which experience had shown to be indispensable. “Understanding and sympathy,” he said, “are essential elements In our free and equal Imperial co-operation.” Interviewed, Mr. Amery emphasised the absolute equality and freedom of all partners in the British Commonwealth. He declared that the Imi rial Conference had cleared away misunderstanding, which might have prevented future co-operation and unity. He acknowledged how the Dominions had helped Britain by their preferences, and spoke hopefully of the future work of the Empire Marketing Board. Mr. Amery left for Pretoria, where he will be the guest of the Premier. He will make a six weeks’ tour of the Union and Rhodesia.—A. and N.Z.
