TWO CAMPBELLS GUILTY OF FRAUD

SENTENCE ON MONDAY DUNEDIN MOTOR CASE (.Special to THE SUN.) DUNEDIN, Friday. After three hours’ consideration of the charges against Alexander Campbell, manager of the “New Zealand Motoring and Engineering Company,” James Shaw Campbell, Samuel Campbell, Charles James Thomas Alexander Lowery, Frederick William Barnfield, and Clifford Peel, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty against Samuel Campbell. A. Campbell was found guilty on the first, third, fifth, sixth, and eighth counts; J. S. Campbell, guilty on the second and ninth counts: Lowery, guilty on the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh counts; Bainfield, guilty on the second, third, fourth, fifth, and eighth counts; and Peel guilty on the eighth and ninth counts. They were found not guilty on the other charges. There were nine counts in the indictment, in which the accused were charged with having procured sums of money by advances by finance corporations to the New Zealand Motor Engineering Company by means of false pretences. It was not seriously suggested that the hire and purchase agreements were genuine transactions, as was practically admitted by all counsel, said Mr. Justice Sim, in summing up.
