PRINCESS AND TIVOLI
“BUTTERFLIES IN THE RAIN” A fascinating, exciting story of the upper strata of society in England is occupying the screen of the Princess and Tivoli Theatres, where “Butterflies in the Rain” is jjlaying. To Laura La Plante goes grateful praise for a perfect characterisation of the English sister to our famous American flapper. Laura, with her beautiful dimples, her blonde hair and her sparkling live eyes, takes another step up the ladder of popular acclaim for her work in this picture. She has been leaping forward at greatly accelerated speed during the past year, and this picture presents he at her most graceful, her most beautiful, and shows her to be the vivacious actress we have always known her to be. James Kirkwood, as the staid lover, gives a natural characterisation, for
which he, too, deserves praise. Kirkwood is especially good in this type of role and is the kind that girls worship—strong, virile, and led only by the highest ideals of action. An excellent supporting cast includes Dorothy Cummings, Robert Ober, Dorothy Stokes, Edward Davis, Clarence Thompson and Ruby Lafayette. As a stage play, “Hassan” met with much success in London, and was acclaimed one of the most colourful plays of Persia that have been seen. James Elroy Flecker is the author, and now the people of Auckland are privileged to see the great play produced in a most lavish and spectacular manner in the Paramount picture, “The Lady of the Harem,” which is also being shown at the Princess and Tivoli Theatres. Featured members of the cast of “The Lady of the Harem,*’ which was adapted for the screen by James T. O'Donohoe, are Ernest Torrence, William Collier, jun., Greta Nissen and Louise Fazenda.
Arthur Somers Roche, one of the most widely read of present-day authors, is said to have created a masterpiece in “Fingerprints,” a Warner classic, and the story has been given an excellent cast. Those popular comedians, Louise Fazenda and John T. Murray, are the stars, admirably supported by a cast that includes Helene Costello, Myrna Loy, Ed. Kennedy, George Nichols, Jerry Hiley, Martha Mattox, Franklin Pangborn, William) Demarest, Robert Stone, Warner Rich-: mond and Andy Norton.
