CONFERENCE OF TIMBER WORKERS
REQUESTS TO GOVERNMENT Press Association. WELLINGTON, Thursday. Timber "Workers’ Federation Conference to-day passed remits that the Government be urged to bring about at once a reciprocal arrangement with regard to workers’ compensation between Tasmania and New Zealand; that the Workers’ Compensation Act he amended to make provision tor full compensation in the event of a worker being killed while on the property of his employer, so long as it is during working hours, whether he is doing the actual work he is engaged to perform, or otherwise; that the second schedule ~f the Act be amended to provide for compensation for partial loss, which is not provided for in the present Act and which is to be paid for on a pro rata basis; that the Act be amendoo to allow of reasonable hospital and medical expenses up to £23, where necessary, in the case of accidents. The Government is urged to take over all insurance risks under the Compensation Act, with a view to the reduction of premiums. It was decided to increase capitation fees by a shilling a member to provide funds for organising the North Island timber workers and unemployed and. through the Alliance of Labour to urge unions to embody in their awards a clause making compulsory the provision of an ambulance chest by employers. 1 It was also decided to request the Government to appoint two practical workers from the Federation, for both Islands, to instal all woodworking machinery in an endeavour to minimise accidents.
