RAILWAY ELECTRIFICATION
THE announcement that the last of the tenders for the electrification of the Christ church-Lyttelton railway has been let. and that the total amount of the contract is £BO,OOO, will bring about a renewal of the demand for the electrification of the Auckland suburban system. Steam suburban transit is out of date for large and growing cities with ever-spreading outlying settlements. Auckland is blessed with many fine suburbs which are now, or will be, served by rail transport. It is time that serious consideration was given to the possibility of eliminating sulphurous smoke fumes and to the adoption of less antique locomotion. Electric railroad traction is clean, swift, economical and comfortable. It is a modern necessity, and since Auckland is the most modern and vital city in the Dominion, with the largest and finest suburban areas, only the most modern methods of transport will adequately serve it. Electrification is overdue and its necessity should be stressed until a definite move in this direction is made.
