YOUTH AND LIQUOR
BARMAN FINED For supplying a youth under 21 years of age with liquor, Norman Dodson, barman at the Te Awamutu Hotel, was fined £5 and costs 10s by Mr. Wyvern Wilson, at the Te Awamutu Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. Constable F. J. Hooker gave evidence that he saw the youth in the public bar and the barman admitted supplying the liquor. Later, in company with Constable Doyle, he met the youth and while questioning him Dodson came up, and addressing the youth, said: “If they ask you, you were not in the hotel. Don’t tell them anything.” Then, as Dodson was leaving, he remarked: “I beat you that time.” His Worship said there were some bad features about the case. Defendant attempted to obstruct the police by trying to get the boy to tell lies. A further charge against M. W. Muir, licensee of the hotel, was heard. The charge was admitted. His Worship took into account the fine record of the defendant and the manner in which the hotel was conducted. A fine of £ 1 and costs was imposed. Then the youth in the case was charged with obtaining liquor while under the age of 21 years, when actually hfe was only 18 years. His Worship in imposing a fine of £1 and costs, said to accused: “It is not a sign of manliness to be drinking in a bar. You may be, as your counsel says, a good sportsman as a boxer and footballer, but you cannot keep fit by drinking. Also, it is not clever to obtain anything by lying.”
