MATCHES IN ENGLAND TATE’S FINE BOWLING By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright LONDON, Tuesday. In the course of the county cricket matches, which ended to-day, Tate (Sussex) achieved the feat of talcing 200 wickets and scoring 1,000 runs, the first player to do so this season. Sutcliffe (Yorkshire> is the first batsman to reach 2,000 runs for the season. The results of the matches were as follow: Playing against Notts, Surrey in the first innings made 522 for seven wickets, and declared (Hobbs 131, Sandham 140, Ducat 58, Barling 59, Fender 66 not out). Notts in the first innings made 259 (Gunn 89, Gregory five for 62). Surrey won on the first innings. Hobbs gave a remarkably free exhibition. The critics consider it was one of his best 1 efforts. Playing against Middlesex, Sussex in their first innings made 477 for nine wickets and declared (Wensley 50, Cook , 110, Langridge 96, A. H. Gilligan 88). Middlesex in the first innings made . 305 for six wickets (Stevens 81, Hendren 11S). The match was drawn. Playing against Lancashire, Yorkshire in the first innings made 157 (Sutcliffe 95, Sibbles four wickets for 54 runs), and in the second innings j 314 for six wickets (Sutcliffe 135, Macaulay 61 not out). I Lancashire in the first innings made : 360 for nine wickets, and declared (E. j Tyldesley 165, Iddon 77). Lancashire i won on the first Innings. Playing against Hampshire, Kent in j the first innings made 407 (Ashdown
54, J. Bryan 59, Woolley 88, Chapman 64). Hampshire in the first innings made 81 (Wright four for 25, Freeman six for 3S), and in the second innings 234 (Mead 12S). Kent won by an innings and 92 runs. For Essex, against Worcestershire, Xicholls took six wickets for 44 runs. Essex won. For Somersetshire, against Gloucestershire, Cresswell took four wickets ; for 25 runs. For Gloucestershire, Parker in the first innings took nine wickets for 103 runs, and in the second innings seven for 51. Somerset won. For Xorthants, against Leicestershire, Jupp took seven wickets for 49 runs. Xorthants won. Rain interfered with most of the j matches.—A. and N.Z.
