Twenty Chinese for Deportation
EXPIRED PERMITS TWO TO LEAVE TO-MORROW There are 20 Chinese in Auckland who have overstayed their leave under the Immigration Restriction Act, and the police are having difficulty in finding them. rpwo of them, Leon Yuk Joe and Chung Joe, appeared at the Police Court to-day and pleaded guilty to charges of having stayed in New Zealand longer than their temporary permits allowed. Mr. W. A. Penn, Collector of Customs, said that Yuk Joe’s permit expired in March, 1926, and Chung Joe’s in October, 1926. “Some Chinese have been giving much trouble in this way,” said Mr. Penn, “and it has been suggested that they should be imprisoned before deportation.” Constable Doel said that there was trouble in tracing these Chinese, and there were now 20 “wanted.” Mr. Penn mentioned that tickets had been purchased for both accused, and they would leave New Zealand tomorrow. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, ordered them to be deported, and fined Yuk Joe £lO and Chung Joe £5.
