LEAGUE SPECTATORS
Sir.— As a follower of League football and a regular attender at Carlaw Park, I wish through your paper to enter an emphatic protest against the treatment meted out by a section of demonstrative spectators to a member of the Marist Old Boys’ League team. J. O’Brien. Here we have a truly great player, and a man who, through his individual efforts as an international and representative, has done a great deal to foster the game, subjected to insults, boos, and even attempted assaults by irresponsible and rowdy spectators, who have not a true sporting instinct in them. As one who has played senior Rugby and is a convert to the League game, I will say that the conduct of a certain section of spectators at Carlaw Park Saturday after Saturday is an absolute disgrace, and detrimental to League football. To hear the expressions employed by men around one in denouncing the efforts of the referee to control a fast and spectacular game is to a decent man unbearable. It is high time that League officials took some steps to protect men who entertain the public, and who by their efforts on the field of sport assist the League to fill the League Council’s coffers, and to promote the game.
