HUMAN DERELICTS

QUITE INCAPABLE PROBLEM FOR COURT (Special to THE SUN.) WANGANUI, To-day. John Robert Southward and William David Montgomery, who appeared unshaven and unwashed in court last Monday to answer to a charge of vagrancy, were again before the court yesterday, when they presented a very different appearance, having been cleaned up and nourished under the care of Gaol Superintendent Ching. Sergeant Sivyer said that when arrested accused were in a filthy condition, covered with vermin and halfstarved. They were also dull mentally. This would mitigate against them getting employment. It was difficult to know what to do with them. He suggested a term of imprisonment to tide them over a lean period. They had very little aptitude for work in gaol, and had to be driven to keep themselves clean. Mr. Hewitt, S.M., agreed that it was difficult to know what to do with them. As it was their first offence, he decided to convict and discharge them.
