ROYAL RUGBY TROPHY FOR N.Z. MAORIS

CLUB COMPETITION OUTLINED Press Association. GISBORNE, To-day. The Poverty Bay Rugby Union has adopted a scheme for a competition among Maori football clubs throughout the Dominion for a handsome trophy presented by the Prince of Wales. The trophy was presented by the Prince at the suggestion of the late Sir James Caroll, and it was the wish of the latter that the first match for the cup should be played at his birthday celebrations at Whakaki. The Maoris desire that this wish should be carried out, and that the competition should start at Whakaki on August 20. The Rugby Union, believing that the competition would foster Rugby among the natives, has decided to approach the Maori Advisory Board and the New Zealand Rugby Union on the matter.
