A.A.A. ACTIVITIES

The first meeting: of the new council of the A.A.A. will be held on August 10. It is anticipated that the list of new members which will come forward for confirmation on that date will bring the association’s membership up to the 5,000 mark. Members who can supply the names of motorists to whom the benefits of the organisation would appeal will greatly assist in the achievement of a larger membership.

The council of the A.A.A. proposes to celebrate the attainment of the 5.000 level by a dinner or social function. The organisation is in an excellent financial position and it is likely that once the membership has passed 5,000 added privileges will be available.

A complaint has been lodged with the A.A.A. regarding the freight charges on cars from Thames to Auckland. One motorist returning from the Thames celebrations, who decided to ship his car rather than face the Paeroa-Pokeno road, was quoted £1 freight. On taking delivery in Auckland, however, he found he had to pay an additional 12s 3d wharfages. Motorists are reminded of these charges, and should take them into consideration.

The A.A.A.’s five-mile speed-testing course along the Great South Road is now completed. The first post is placed just on the Southern side of the Tamaki Bridge, and follows along the Great South Road to the northern boundary of the Manurewa Town Board.

The test applies only when run from Otahuhu to Manurewa, and to test a speedometer the centre of the car should be driven four feet from the left-hand edge of the concrete. The posts are placed at mile intervals.

Great thanks are due to Mr. G. T. Murray, the consulting engineer, who surveyed the course. For the convenience of motorists who are contemplating a visit to Rotorua at the holiday time, and spending a., week or 10 days at the camping grounds there, the A.A.A. are aiming to provide help. Proposals are afoot to make provision for a road map of Rotorua and district, showing all places of interest. This will be obtainable from the A.A.A. agent at Rotorua, Mr. W. T. Fakes.
