Chamberlin, flying a Fokker plane, successfully took off from a runway on the deck of the liner Leviathan, 150 miles out at sea, demonstrating the feasibility of using planes to expedite fast mail services between the United States and Europe, and in that way saving 4S hours. United States shipping lines have declared an intention to provide similar runways on various other vessels, as a result of the success of the experiment.—A. and N.Z.
