Over Pony Hurdles « Rafferty, piloted by S. Stanway. j cleared three pony hurdles safely and the jumper is showing improvement since joining W. Patterson's stable. Promising Jumper Glenlight was given a lesson over two of the smaller hurdles, and he got through his task safely. Strong Work Te Tahi (E. Stanway), after jumping a couple of hurdles, was galloped at a sound pace over seven furlongs. Promising Youngster Frodice, the two-year-old sister to Phaola, both of whom are in F. E. Loomb’s team at Te Awamutu, is stated to be very promising. In Demand Since taking up his residence in Auckland Len Dulieu has been at the track each morning, where his services to ride work have been in demand. Included in his engagements for the Pakuranga meetings are Star Comet and Gala Day. To Run at Marton Te Tahi will be a competitor in flat events at the Pakuranga meeting and he will be ridden by E. Stanway, who will also have the mount on him in hurdle events at the Marton meeting. For Jellicoe Handicap Evidently Golden Krist is to take his place in the mile and a-quarter event at the Pakuranga meeting, for ho is being sent over a distance in his track work. On Saturday morning he covered a round on the sand. Worked It Off When accompanied by Thursby, Gala Day left the last four of six furlongs behind in 55sec. at Ellerslie on Saturday morning, and the lameness that was apparent a few days ago has disappeared. Work at Ellerslie There was a fair amount of galloping on the sand track at Ellerslie on Saturday morning, but nothing in the way of fast time was registered. Next week matters should become interesting, in view of the approaching Pakuranga Hunt Club meeting, weights for which are due on Friday next. Martian’s Dam Oterden, the dam of Martian, was selected in England for the late Mr. G. G. Stead by the late Mr. W. Allison, who was at that time “special commissioner” ofr the London sportsman. Mr. Allison had a world-wide reputation as an authority on the thoroughbred and when he selected Otterden she was carrying Martian, who first saw the light of day in this country. Hathor and Winter Cup Hathor, who is a four-year-old, has had a fairly good record this season, as out of 13 attempts she has landed the bulky end of the stake upon four occasions and in addition secured a first placing. From the weight range of outlook she is well treated in the Winter Cup, as she will only have to carry five pounds over the minimum. By many Hathor is considered to be a rod in pickle for the Winter Cup on Tuesday week. Punka in England London “Sporting Life” draws attention to the suceesS of a colt named Black Watch, who won a two-year-old race at Wolverhampton. Black Watch was got by Black Gauntlet from Punka, who no doubt is identical with the Great Autumn winner of 1910. Punka was taken to England by Mr. J. B. Reid, in company with other mares, to form a smal land select stud which he established near Newmarket. Punka is an Australian-bred mare by Cooltrim from Drowsy, by Ayr Laddie —Slumber, by Trenton—Nightmare, bv Panic. Horse Lorry Slips A. number of horses, including Kaiti, which were being transported by motor-lorry from Hastings on Monday for Gisbcrne to fulfil engagements there, narrowly escaped disaster when near Waikare. Owing to the wet condition of the road the lorry slipped badly sideways, and went within an ace of being precipitated over the bank into a gorge. After considerable difficulty the lorry was got back on to the centre of the road and proceeded on its way. Training at Riccarton A few fair gallops were recorded at Riccarton on Saturday morning. The going was very holding. Kawini and Viewpoint were companions over a mile in lmin 52sec. Viewpoint was beaten at the bottom of the straight, and left Kawini to come on an easy winner. Aberfeldy and Tuki covered a mile in lmin 54 2-ssec. Cornstalk and Chickwlieat were sprinted three furlongs, the former being in front at the end of the gallop. Royal Game sprinted three furlongs in 41sec. Royal Form cleared four hurdles in good style. Hathor’s Pilot The indispositon of J. Barry has apparently led to some uncertainty as to Hathor’s rider. Saturday’s “Dominion” states: “J. Barry is at present confined to his bed suffering from the effects of a fall off a young horse due to some gear giving way. D. C. Watts is going South to-night, and according to him he will be on Hathor to-day. The owner of Hathor, Mr. J. McCartin. however, stated yesterday that S. Henderson was riding Hathor, both in the Brabazon Handicap and the Winter Cup. This point will no doubt be cleared up when he meets his trainer, T. F. Quinlivan at Riccarton to-day.” It is not known who rode Hathor on Saturday, but probably Watts was aboard. S. Henderson does not leave for Riccarton until Wednesday.
