MAORIS AGAIN BEATEN Press Association. NELSON, Saturday. In a fast and open game played at Nelson to-day the Maori Rugby team was defeated by Nelson-Golden Bay by 14 points to 11. The visitors’ backs showed to advantage, but the local forwards shone in the loose. The Maoris failed to get properly going until well on in the second spell. Their backs gave a bright display, but sound defensive tactics by the home team kept down the score. The first spell ended in favour of Nelson, B—3. Soon after resuming the Maoris evened the scores, but Nelson then got a lead of three points, which was maintained until the last few minutes, when the scores were again even. The concluding stages were exciting, the visitors almost scoring several times. In the last half minute Snodgrass kicked a penalty for Nelson and won the match. For the winners Snodgrass scored all 14 points. CLOSE GOING WELLINGTON CHAMPIONSHIP Pt'ess Association. WELLINGTON, To-day. The result of Saturday’s Rugby, which was played on sodden grounds, with intermittent showers, is to leave the championship still open to question. No side has won more than nine games out of 14, and there are only

four points between the first four clubs on the list. Athletic, the present champions, who played a draw with Petone, lead by one point from Old Boys, and University are one point, and Petone two points, behind. Nine challenges have been entered for the Peace Cup, which the Plamilton Rugby team recently won from Thames, when the time for entries expired on Saturday. Hauraki Plains originally had a challenge in, but withdrew owing to the inability to fix a date for their match. Owing to the number of challenges entered, elimination play-offs have been arranged. Even so, the holders (Hamilton) have a continuous list of fixtures. They meet Morrinsville on August 13, and Cambridge the following week. Waipa play off with Matamata in time for the winner to meet Hamilton before August 27. Similarly, Piako play Paeroa, the winner to meet Hamilton before September 3, while the winners of Pukekohe-Waiuku play-off meet Hamilton prior to September 10. Should Hamilton still retain the trophy, they play Thames, the final challengers, on September 17 or 24. CANTERBURY TOURING TEAM Press Association. * WANGANUI, Sunday. A representative Rugby game between the Canterbury South touring team and the Wanganui A team yesterday ended in a victory for the latter by 28 points to 6. Canterbury dominated the position at the outset, but the strong defence and more masterly play of the local men asserted itself. Wanganui’s first score came from a sensational race down the line between Hartley and Trotter. the former’s speed giving him the victory After a hard tussle Lawson cut his way cleanly through the Wanganui defence to score. South Canterbury did not score again until in the concluding stages, when G. Lawson scored from a penalty kick. Although Wanganui ran up a big score the game was interesting to the end, South Canterbury playing brightly all through. Leahy and J. Jphnston played sterling games for Wanganui, and Hartley. Ball and Vangioni were the outstanding backs.
