PERSONAL. —Captain D . Calder, whose death occurred at Burwood, Sydney, on July 9, was one of the bestknown master mariners out of Sydney in the ’eighties. For many years he successfully commanded the Gunga, City of Melbourne, Rockton and Birksgate in the Sydney-Noumea and Fiji trade, and his genial manner made him exceedingly popular with the travelling public. While in the Gunga he rescued the passengers and crew of the Union steamer Taupo, which was wrecked on an island in the New Hebrides Group. On retiring from the sea Captain Calder became agent for the A.U.S.N. at Fiji, and he left that position several years ago to settle down in Sydney. Widely known and respected, he had a host of friends in Australia and among the islands. Captain P. J. Foster, marine superintendent of the Union Company, Wellington, arrived in Auckland yesterday. Captain A. Reed, late master of the Moeraki, is to take command of the Kurow when she recommissions at Auckland this week. Captain Reed arrived here yesterday from Wellington. Captain A. R. Cant, master of the Hinemoa. is to leave New Zealand early in September for London, to take command of the Government’s new motorship for her maiden voyage from Home SUGAR FROM JAVA. —The steamer Cymric Pride sailed from Samarang. Java, for Auckland last Wednesday with a full cargo of sugar. She is expected to arrive about August 15, and Spedding, Limited, will be the local agents. OCEAN TRANSPORT FROM TEXAS. —The steamer Ocean Transport sailed from Galveston, Texas, last Wednesday with a full cargo of sulphur for discharge at Auckland, New Plymouth and Newcastle. She is due at Auckland about September 4. MAKURA FROM SAN FRANCISCO. —The local office of the Union Company have been advised that the R.M.S. Makura is expected to arrive at Wellington to-morow afternoon from San Francisco, via ports, and is scheduled to leave again at 3 p.m. on Wednesday for Sydney. KAITOKE SAILING. The Union Company advises that the cargo steamer Kaitoke leaves Auckland at 5 p.m. to-day for Newcastle, where she will load for Suva and Auckland. She will also load general cargo at Sydney for Suva. ISLAND FRUIT STEAMER. The Island fruit steamer Waipahi docks tomorrow for cleaning and painting, and the Union Company hope to dispatch her from Auckland at 10 a.m. on Wednesday for Rarotonga, Aitutaki, Atiu. Mauke and Mangaia. KAIWARRA REPORTS The Union Company have been advised by radio that the collier Kaiwarra is expected to arrive at Auckland at 2 p.m. on Wednesday from Newcastle. After discharge at this port the Kaiwarra will undergo overhaul and survey here. TAINUI LEAVES HOME.— The Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Tainui is reportd to have cleared Southampton on Friday, en route from London to New Zealand. The vessel is due at Wellington on September 5 to land passengers. The cargo will he unladed at Port Chalmers and Lyttelton,
MAHENO REPORTS The Union Company has received a radio message from the master of the intercolonial steamer Maheno, advising that he expects the vessel to arrive in the stream at Auckland at V o'clock to-morrow morning from Sydney. After pratique has been granted the Maheno will berth about 8.30 a.m. at the Queen’s Wharf. She is scheduled to leave here at 11 a.m. next Friday on her return trip to Syd ney. The Hauraki will load at Vancouver and San Francisco in September for Auckland, Wellington, Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney. The Waitemata will load at Vancouver and San Francisco during October for Auckland, Melbourne and Sydney. The Waikawa will load at Vancouver and San Francisco late in October for New Zealand and Australian ports. The Waihemo will load at Vancouand San Francisco late in October and early in November for New' Zealand and Australian ports. lONIC DEPARTS. BEARPORT DUE TO-MORROW. According to a further radio message received by Henderson and Macfarlane, the American steamer Bearport is expected to arrive at Auckland at 9 a.m. to-morow from the Pacific Coast ports. Besides cargo for discharge at this port, the vessel will also discharge at Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Brisbane. ARAWA AT SOUTHAMPTON.— With passengers, mail and cargo from Xew Zealand- the Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Arawa reached Southampton on Friday, according to a cable report. The vessel was dispatched from Wellington, via Montevideo and Teneriffe, on June 16. PORT OF ONEHUNGA—DEPARTURE SATURDAY OHINEMURI (2.30 p.m.), 114 tons, Parker, for Whangape. The Rarawa left at 3 p.m. to-day for Xew Plymouth, and returns to Onehunga on Wednesday morning. The Xgatiawa sailed at 4 o’clock today for Raglan, Kawhia and Port Waikato. and is due back at Onehunga next Thursday. The Arapawa is to sail from Onehunga at noon to-morrow for Wanganui, ar.d is ! expected back about Friday. The Titoki arrives at Onehunga on Wednesday from Kaipara and leaves the fol- j lowing day for Picton, Nelson, Westport , and Greymouth. *
