POLICE SERGT.’S DEATH
POPULAR OPOTIKI OFFICER (From Our Own Correspondent.) OPOTIKI, To-day. The death occurred of Sergeant James Ferguson, aged 58 years, of the Police Force at Opotiki, at Rotorua this morning. The deceased came to Opotiki in 1912 and took charge of the police department here. Prior to his transfer to Opotiki he saw extensive service on the Auckland waterfront as police sergeant. As a sergeant of the Artillery Corps he distinguished himself prior to joining the police. He was greatly respected by all who knew him and his death has cast a gloom over the district. Sergeant Ferguson was taken seriously ill at the time of the Torere murder, near Opotiki, at the beginning of the year, and had been suffering till the time of his death. The funeral takes place at Rotorua on Wednesday.
