WOMAN CHESS CHAMPION
CZECH WINS TITLE By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright LONDON, Saturday. At the age of 21 Miss Vera Menchek of Hastings, the daughter of a Czechoslovakian, became the world's first woman chess champion at the international tournament which was held at Westminster. Madame Beskow, Sweden, was second. The Hungarian team won the gold challenge cup in a competition between chess masters representing 16 nations. Hansen, of Denmark, and Sir George Thomas, Britain, won the special prizes for the best average scores. Each scored 80 per cent, of the possible total.—A. and X. Z.
