LATE MR. JOHN MCMAHON
EX-SERGEANT OF POLICE A former sergeant of police at Auckland and a well-known figure in the ’9o’s, Mr. John McMahon died yesterday at the age of 94. Coming to New Zealand from Ireland when about 27 years of age, Mr. McMahon arrived in Dunedin in 1860. He spent several months in Australia before coming to the Dominion. Formerly a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary, he joined the police force in Dunedin and was at a number of stations in the South Island. He then left the force and purchased a hotel at Westport. Mr. McMahon visited Ireland when about 40 years of age, and married prior to his return to New Zealand. He rejoined the police force, and was appointed to Thames, later being transferred to Auckland, where he was stationed for 14 years, reaching the rank of sergeant. Retiring over 20 years ago, Mr. McMahon had since been living with his nephew, Mr. Edward McMahon, Mount Albert. Mrs. McMahon predeceased ber husband 24 years ago. There was no family. Mr. McMahon was keenly interested in many branches of sport. He was an uncle of Chief-Detective McMahon, who retired from the Auckland force some years ago.
