CLAIM FOR ASSAULT A dispute between two well-known Maoris claimed the attention of Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., at Te Kuiti, on Wednesday. Henare Martengaro ITetet (Harry Hetet) claimed from Tawhakarikika Patena (Peter Barton) the sum of £2OO for assault and battery at the Te Kuiti Maori Pa, as the result of the dispute between the parties as to the place of interment of two young Maoris. It was stated that one of the deceased was a Catholic and the other belonged to the Church of England. After hearing the evidence at some considerable length the magistrate awarded plaintiff the sum of £lO damages and costs £8 16s.
