BIRKENHEAD NOT IN ON DESTRUCTOR SCHEME
LIABILITY DISCLAIMED Disclaiming liability for its share of the cost of the proposed combined destructor for North Shore districts, the Birkenhead Borough Council last evening refused to make any payments in connection with the scheme, which had not been authorised by the cilThe town clerk of Takapuna had written to the council stating that £989 had been spent in the purchase of a site and road construction. A refund of £ll9 9s 9d was applied for, being in the ratio of Birkenhead's share, £726, to the total cost of £5,700. OTHER DECISIONS The council decided that it could not make a grant to the Seddon Memorial Technical College. The waterworks engineer reported that 2,055,000 gallons of water had been used during the past month. Lake Takapuna had risen a foot during the month, and was now two feet above high tide level. In order to give employment to returned soldiers in the borough, It was decided to apply to the Auckland Returned Soldiers’ Association for a proportion of the Poppy Day fund.
