MAORI WAR VETERAN DEAD
LATE MR. A. J. BERTRAM ONE of the old Forest Rangers, who I saw service right through the j Maori War, Mr. A. J. Bertram, died at his home in Mount Eden at the age of 82. Born at Grouville. Jersey, in the Channel Islands, Mr. Bertram was educated at the Jersey College, London College, and the Lycee Imperial do Saint Brieuc. He arrived in Auckland by the sailing ship Telegraph in 1863. and immediately joined the Forest Rangers under Major Jackson. Serving through the Maori War as a ser-geant-major, he afterwards settled on land granted him at Rangiahua, now known as Hairini. He married a Miss Fenton in 1875. He farmed his land for 50 years, identifying himself with many of the local bodies and sporting activities in the district. He joined the Te Awamutu Cavalry, and was a past master of the Alexandra Masonic Lodge. For 30 years he was a lay reader of the Church of England. Mr. Bertram is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.
