SIR WILLIAM ASHLEY DEAD British Wireless —Press Assn Copyright RUGBY, Monday. The death has occurred of Sir William James Ashley, the eminent economist, who was Vice-Principal of Birmingham University until his retirement two years ago. Sir William Ashley was born in IS6O, and educated at St. Clave’s School and at Balliol College, Oxford. In 1888 he was appointed Professor of Economics at Toronto, and in 1892 went to Harvard University, Boston, as Professor of Economic History. In 1901 he returned to England as Professor of Commerce at Birmingham University, a position he occupied until he retired in 1925. He was a member of many learned societies and various Royal Commissions and committees before and during the war, and since then has been on many Government and other inquiries into industrial matters. He wrote many text-books and treatises on economic and historical subjects.
