AUCKLAND RACING CLUB ACCOUNT OF THE YEAR’S WORKING The committee’s report to be presented at the annual meeting: of the Auckland Racing Club on August i> congratulates the members on the very satisfactory position disclosed in the statement of accounts. The stakes paid away during the year amounted to £67,300, exclusive of i £l2O contributed in sweepstakes by owners, and good racing was witnessed at each meeting. Several large and important works had been proceeded with during the course cf the racing season, notably the extension and improvement of the course proper, on which £4,700 had been spent to date. This accounted for the increase in wages account for the year. COURSE EXTENSION It would probably be January, 1929. before racing could take place on the new extension. The paving of the lawn and leger enclosures at a cost of £4,816 was a great improvement, as it would eliminate dust in summer and mud in winter. The training track. buildings and plant had received the usual careful attention, and no effort had been spared in an endeavour to give owners and trainers the best facilities for the preparation of their horses. The training tracks at Papakura which the club agreed to subsidise with a view to relieving the tracks at Ellerslie, had been completed, and an inspection had ! shown them to be well formed and in 1 good order, and they should be avail- ! able for training opera tions during the ensuing season. LOSS TO RACING The committee regretted having to I record a number of deaths among members since the last annual meeting, namely, Sir Arthur Myers, Messrs. A. A. Bethune, A. B. Carmichael. J. Gallagher, A. Johnston. C. F. Mark. A. Raynes. B. W. Weston, and C. Z. Clayton, who served for many years as a steward of the club. Sir Edwin Mitchelson and Mr. H. 0. Nolan were the only nominees for the offices of president and vice-president * respectively, and would be declared 1 duly elected. Messrs. J. M. Carpenter, R. W. Duder, N. Alfred Nathan and Dr. A. McGregor Grant (retiring members), Ewen W. Alison, jun.. and M. M. ‘ Louisson had ben nominated for the five seats on the committee, and for - the three seats on the stewards. Messrs. L. S Rathbone, W. C. Ring, sen.. G. A. ■ Wynyard (retiring elected stewards), * and M. J. Lynch.
Items of expenditure during the year were:—Wages, £14.564: repairs and maintenance, £3,179: rates. £2,003: land tax, £1,586; conference levies. £ 1.383; donations. £492. Receipts included revenue from race meeting:? £38,751; members’ subscriptions, £2,712; tea kiosk, £233. Brother to Royal Game W. Young has an addition to hi* team at Trentham in the shape of » rising two-year-old brother to Royal Game . Took Ten Stitches Cartoon hit a fence very hard in the steeplechase on the last day’ at Trentham. It now transpires that a wound on the stifle required 10 stitches, and the Southern horse can be looked on as a very doubtful starter at Riccarton. Taranaki’s Small Profit In common with most racing club?, the general financial stringency resulted in a falling-off in totalisator and other revenue for the Taranaki Jockey Club. This was particular!: noticeable on the. occasion of the February meeting. After providing 51 sum of £ 300 7s 5d for depreciation a small profit remains, viz., £27 6s Uk
