MARTIAN PASSES

GREAT SIRE LEFT HIS MARK ON THE TURF A winner in both New Zealand and Australia, and sire of many winners who have captured about £280,000 in stakes, Martian has now to be numbered among the defunct, for the son of Martagon and Otterden was destroyed this week, following an attack of paralysis. So passes a brilliant racehorse and a grand sire. The last of his progeny, a colt from Kildee, was submitted at the Trentham sales six months ago, Out failed to reach the reserve of 2,000 guineas. The youngster was subsequently sold by his owner, Mr. A. McDonald, to a Melbourne sportsman. \ The late Mr. G- G. Stead, one of the pillars of the New Zealand turf, imported the Sheen mare Otterden, who shortly after arrival presented us with Martian. On the turf as a three and four-year-old he Avon races in the Dominion and at Randwick, displaying stamina by winning the Randwick Plate and the Canterbury Cup, both run over two and a-quarter miles. MAKING HISTORY Subsequently Martian became the head of the famous Kinloch stud, at Little River, upon his purchase by Mr. J. F. Buchanan, and it was here that he made history as a sire of stayers. Martian headed the Avinning sires’ list in the Dominion on seven occasions, six times in succession. In addition, to the NeAv Zealand record, the progeny of Martian* scared many important successes in Australia. Susanof credited him with the Melbourne Cup, Cherubini with the Australian Cup, and Cupidon with the Australian Jockey Clubs Derby, while Sasanof, Snub, Reputation, The IluAvk, and Rapine credited him with many weight-for-uge stakes. lous one. In a period of eight year? he claimed six winners. On one c these occasions he provided the three placed horses, Menelaus, Johnny aJ ' ker, Snub, while in two other ye*** he had one placed horse in addifio* to the winner, Snub running second to Ardenvhor, and Menelaus finishing third to Sasanof. In the Canterbury Cup Martian aisu had a wonderful record, as he had si winners, five of them in a period o seven years- Several of Martian * sons have sired winners, but he na. not left one worthy to succeed him the stud. His daughters, have proved great producers, and tn seem certain to keep his name prominently’ under notice for many year
