ALL IN A CAR
MOUNTAINS OF PARTS A season’s requirements for Morris cars include a quarter of a million square feet of plate glass for windscreens, and tens of thousands of miles of insulated copper wire, not to mention the steel tubing, which, if placed end to end, would stretch from Oxford to Paris. This interesting information was given by the production manager of Morris Motors, Ltd., in a lecture to the British Association. He drew a vivid picture of the thousand and one difficulties which lie in the path of a firm whose aim is to produce motor-cars in thousands. For instance, there are not far short of 10,000 separate individual parts, including nuts and bolts, in a Morris car; and as a car is unsaleable with even one of those parts missing, it is not all child’s play to control supplies when one remembers that a finished motor is scheduled to come through the works every two minutes. A hold-up in supplies may occur from a cause which, at first sight, would seem to have no connection whatever with the production of motorcars. A sudden run on ship construction will bring a reduction in the supply of the steel plates which are required for the chassis frames. Difficulties in connection with the supply of camphorwood (which is controlled by the Japanese Government) would result in a shortage of steeringwheels. GARAGE GOSSIP Mr. W. Noton, managing director of Campbell Motors, Ltd., North Island distributors for the Durant line, is leaving for Canada by the Niagara on August 2. Mr. Noton will be away from New Zealand about three months, and will visit the Durant Corporation’s plant at Toronto, Canada, and also other cities in America. The Campbell Motors, Ltd., are also North Island distributors for the Singer car. Mr. Noton will later visit the Singer factory at Coventry, England, returning to New Zealand by the Remuera about November 5. By using the proper size wrench on a nut the possibility of stripping the threads is lessened. * * * Me and my wife had a long argument last night about whether to have the car repainted or the engine overhauled. Do you know a really good paint shop that’s reasonable?
