BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED The first birthday of the Papatoetoe troop of Girl Guides was celebrated on Saturday evening in St. John’s Hall. Among the visitors present were Captain Ellison and the leaders of the Otahuhu troop, Mrs. Johnstone and the leaders of the Manurewa troop, Mrs. Hain, District Commissioner, Mrs. A. B. Jamieson and members of the committee, Patrol Leader Miss D. Barton, Brown Owl Miss H. Bewes, the Rev. T. H. Roseveare and several mothers of the members. During the evening a number of new members were enrolled as guides and Brownies, and Miss H. Bewes was initiated as Brown Owl, 15 service stars were presented to members of the troop and eight second-class badges were also presented. Two novelty competitions held were won by Mrs. Johnstone and Miss Louie Robinson, a display of driil and marching was given by the troop, and their song was rendered, the soloist being Miss Iva Barton. Ngaire and Baida Burrel danced the sword dance and Highland fling. Mrs. Hain presented the patrol with a beautifully iced birthday cake, bearing the patrol’s colours, fawn and green. Pat Richards, the smallest Brownie in the troop, extinguished the single candle, which was afterwards presented to Miss D. Barton. Mrs. Hain then cut the cake. Mrs. Hain was the recipient of a kewpie, decorated with the patrol’s colours, from the hands of Dorothy McFarland, and a dainty boquet of violets from Margaret McFarland. Mrs. Jameson. Miss D. Barton, Mrs. Johnstone and Miss Ellison were also the recipients of bouquets. Altogether the evening was a huge success, and the dainty supper served by the members was enjoyed by one and all.
