PAPAL HONOURS FOR DOMINION PRIESTS

APOSTOLIC AND PRELATE Cabled information has been received in Auckland from the Right Rev. Dr. Cleary, announcing the appointment of the Very Rev. Monsignor Cahill, V.G., dean of Manukau, a Prothonotary apostolic, and the Very Rev. thontary apostolic, and the Rery Rev.

Thofnas Lane, V.F., dean of Ohinemuri, a prelate. The announcement will be received with much satisfaction, not only by the clergy and laity of the Catholic diocese, but also by a large section of the general public, among whom the reverend gentlemen have a host of admirers and friends. Born near Thurles, County Tipperary, Ireland, in 1879, Monsignor Cahill after completing his studies at Mount Melieray and St. Patrick’s College, Carlow, was ordained by the late Most Rev. Dr. Foley in 1904. Arriving in Auckland during the same year, he was for two years assistant at St. Patrick’s Cathedral before being appointed parish priest at Ngaruawahia and Huntly, where he laboured for eight years. It was during his time there that the handsome brick church in Ngaruawahia, and the church, convent and school in Huntly were built, the latter made possible through the generosity of Miss Ralph. On leaving the Waikato, Monsignor Cahill acted for a short time as administrator of the Sacred Heart Church, Ponsonby, and later at the cathedral. Until his transfer to Onehunga in 1925 Monsignor Cahill was parish priest at Parnell. During his life in Auckland the monsignor has always associated himself with movements for the betterment of his congregations, and has done splendid work in connection with the girls’ hostel. During his absence on a visit to

Ireland in 1924 he was appointed vicargeneral of the diocese. MGNSIGNOR LANE Monsignor Lane was for 22 years pastor at Gisborne. He is not so widely known in Auckland, as most of his work has been concerned in the development and building up of the Church on the East Coast. He is considered a man of sound, practical judgment, and was a most popular figure in Gisborne. The new prelate was born at Michelstown, Cork, Ireland, and

studied at Mount Melieray, St. Sulphice, Paris, and All Hallows, Dublin. In 1896 he was ordained for the diocese of Brisbane by the Rev. Archbishop Walsh. 111-health was responsible for his removal to New Zealand because of the more suitable climate. He arrived in Onehunga in 1901, and was afterwards appointed pastor of the newly-formed parish of Ormond. In 1906 Monsignor Lane was transferred to Gisborne, later succeeding the Monsignor Hackett as pastor of Ellerslie. Three years ago he was appointed dean of Ohinemuri.
