MAIN TRUNK THRILL
Engine, Postal-Van and Carriage Capsized Near Otaki Station
LUCKY ESCAPES OF PASSENGERS
Press Association.
OTAKI, To-day. rS Auckland down express fouled a rail 100 yards from the Otaki station this morning, capsizing the engine, postal van and a second-class smoker. No one was injured, but a considerable amount of damage was done to the line.
rail penetrated a portion of the engine. There were 90 passengers on the train, seventeen being in the second-class carriage. The smash was heard a quarter of a mile away. Napier and New Plymouth trains were held up. The passengers were transhipped, and the Napier mail re-
turned to Wellington. The engine from Palmerston North will take the Auckland carriages north. The cause of the accident was probably a defective rail, or it may have been due to the cold frosty morning. The train luckily was travelling only about 20 miles an hour, due to repairs being carried out to the line.
