Auckland Boxing Championships

REVIEW OF COMPETITION EX-CHAMPIONS ENGAGED The Auckland Amateur Boxing Championships, which will be held at the Town Hall on Monday and Tuesday nights have attracted a record entry. The contestants number 67, and with representatives from many country centres, in addition to the Auckland amateurs, the boxing should be of a high standard. The Northern Boxing Association is catering for the needs of the public by reducing prices to a level never before reached. In view of the number of entries the programme will commence at seven o’clock. The ex-Hawke’s Bay fly-weight, F. Pearcey, and C. Verral appear to be the outstanding boxers in the fly-weight class, and if they meet tbjpy should provide a stirring contest. S. McLachlan is another promising boxer.’ J. O’Sullivan, who has won the Auckland bantam title on two occasions, and has been a runner-up at the New Zealand championships, is in good form. He has, however, two good boxers to meet in C. Manson and G. Leslie. Leslie participated in the feather-class last year. With these boys competing, the bantam division is sure to provide good entertainment. G. Smith will defend his title in the Teathers and he will find that he has a harder row to hoe than last year. Agnew is an exceptionally good boxer as is also Rickard, the New Zealand University champion. Other good boxers are R. McLachlan, a territorial winner, and L. London. LIGHT-WEIGHTS HARDEST The light-weight promises to be a hard class, perhaps the hardest, Bisliara, of Taurrrarunui, has greatly improved. Slattery, of Te Kuiti, who impressed last year, should be a deciding factor. CX Broadfoot, the present holder, and C. McKnight, who gained .a decision over Broadfoot recently, are both competing. The Taumaranui representative, Jim Smith, is an ex-North Island champion. D. Armishaw is an ex-Auckland feather-weight champion. L. Gee, of Tauranga, and F, Fraei, the hard-hitting Aucklander, are both nominated in the welter-class as well. Last year’s welter champion. La Rousee, has injured his hand and will be* unable to defend his title. A previous holder, Eric Armishaw, Joe Smith, of Taumarunui, and F. Leary, should make things very interesting in this class. There is a large entry in the middle division. J. Tierney, of Taumarunui, and P. Combe, of Te Aroha. are both good fighters. The best known of the others are McLean, Gardiner and Buckley. Last year’s cruiser champion, Hogg, of the Waikato, will defend his title against K. Ryan and S. Burt. There are only two heavies competing. The title holder, P. McCarthy, will defend his title. His opponent will be D. Cowan, of Helensville.
