GISBORNE CLUB
LACK OF SUPPORT CESSATION OF OPERATIONS TRANSFERRING PERMIT At the recent assembly of the New Zealand Trotting Conference at Wellington, applications were received for additional totalisator permits from Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki and Northland (Whangarei) Clubs. The Poverty Bay and Wanganui Clubs made a request to be allowed to change over from trotting to racing. In connection with the latter application the conference could not see its way to accede to the request in view of the need of further trotting permits, and the claims of the three clubs mentioned were recognised as worthy of support. A FINAL EFFORT There were however a few “die hard” light harness enthusiasts in Gisborne who were not prepared to give up the trotting ghost without a final struggle, and a special meeting was called to consider rescinding the resolution previously passed to change the constitution from a trotting club to a racing body. The meeting eventuated last night, and a Press Association message states the motion relative to the change was rescinded. It was decided, however, that in view of the poor support accorded trotting in the district, to send the permit to the Minister of Internal Affairs, with a recommendation it should be transferred to Hawke’s Bay. SPORTING ACTION The Poverty Bay Club is to be commended for its sporting and neighbourly action, and no doubt broad-minded sportsmen throughout the Dominion will agree that in the interest of the popular pastime on the East Coast, the defunct body has made a wise decision. It is to be regretted that sufficient support was not forthcoming in the Poverty Bay district to warrant a continuance of the sport, but the hardship
inflicted on owners in the province will be alleviated to a great extent if the neighbouring Hawke's Bay Club is given an extra day’s racing. It is to be hoped the trotting authorities will support the recommendation of the Poverty Bay Club, and that the Minister will sanction the transfer. TROTTING FIXTURES July 23—South Canterbury Hunt (one event.) August 6, 10, 12—New Zealand Metropolitan Winter. ACCEPTANCES August 2—New Zealand Metropolitan Winter.
