GISBORNE DREDGES IN CALLIOPE DOCK
ANNUAL SPRING-CLEANING OVER 40 MEN AT WORK Two interesting inmates of the Calliope Dock at present are the Maui and the Korua, dredges belonging to the Gisborne Harbour Board, which are now paying their customary visit to Auckland for an annual overhaul. Messrs. Seagar Bros., marine and general engineers, of this city, are carrying out the work of refitting, which entails minor repairs, and scraping and painting the hulls of both vessels. Over 40 men are employed on this spring-cleaning. The Maui is a dredge and hopper all in one, and displaces about 565 tons, while the Korua is simply a dredge, of 184 tons. Small though she is, the Korua can lift 1,000 tons of mud an hour, and has recently done some rapid dredging at Gisborne. This vessel was acquired two years ago from Melbourne. When the vessels leave the dock in six or eight days’ time, the Maui will proceed to Westport, where she will dredge under the jurisdiction of the Government, while the Korua will take up her former work in the service of the Gisborne Harbour Board.
