MODERN FLOORS

SURFACING BY MACHINE A VALUABLE DEVICE It is not strange that constructive brains the world over concentrate upon the improvement of homes. As the name implies, the Auckland Floor Surfacing Company offers a special service for the perfecting of floors and in this respect is taking up the line of America where all wellappointed buildings contain floors finished off with a machine—the size of a lawn-mower—which quickly and effectively produces a table-top smoothness. It has an electricallydriven drum carrying sandpaper which revolves at a rapid rate. Also fitted to the machine is a. vacuum attachment, which lifts all dust and keeps the floor perfectly clean. There is also a smaller machine which polishes in very thorough style. Of course, this dispenses' with

the old slow and unsatisfactory system of floor surfacing which involved hand labour and was so cumbersome to the average carpenter.

The Auckland Floor Surfacing Coy., for which Messrs. McColl and Sons, the well-known Onehunga timber merchants are representatives, undertake floor work for all buildings and homes, and thereby confer an economical benefit on builders and home owners. The machines are hired out with expert operators at a reasonable cost for each job. Old, uneven floors can be made like new, with all signs of plane marks and ridges removed. A smooth floor surface, it may be added, means a marked saving in the wear and tear on linoleums and carpets, so that renovations, apart from the obvious improvement in appearance, makes the subsequent cleaning and sweeping a much easier matter. "PARQUET” FLOORS The company also specialises in the laying down of Parquet wooden floors. The former, attached to wood or concrete, is supplied in oak, jarrah, Tasmanian blackwood, Queensland maple, silky oak and other suitable inlaid timbers. These floors, in attractive patterns, are considered to be the hallmark of superior modern premises. In Australia “Parquet” is in foremost demand and such well-known business firms as Messrs. Farmers’, Ltd., and Grace Bros., Ltd., have used this flooring. More recently “Parquet” was selected for the Federal House of Parliament at Canberra.

All phases of the firm’s products and service are represented in the compactly arranged stand in Shed 12, where the floor surfacing machine is to be seen in actual use.
