INQUEST CONCLUDED
THE RUATANGATA VICTIMS DEATH BY MISADVENTURE (From Our Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, To-day. The inquest concerning the death of Charles Gilbert Rumball and Matthew George Thorburn, at the Ruatangata railway crossing was concluded yesterday. The coroner, Mr. F. W. Levien, S.M., decided to inspect the locality and then delivered a verdict to the effect that death was due to misadventure. In delivering the verdict, he said he had inspected the scene of the accident in order to have a clear mind on the position. Several witnesses had inferred that the view of the crossing was partly obscured with the gate leading to Ruatangata station, but on inspection he found nothing to justify this conclusion. The view was absolutely clear and nothing lead to the assumption that Ruatangata crossing was dangerous. Apart from control of the whistle the driver could do nothing as it was to stop in such a short distance or turn aside. The evidence did not give any means of arriving at a conclusion regarding the actual merits of the case.
