CAR STOLEN TWICE IN THREE WEEKS
OVERTURNED AND SMASHED TWO YOUNG MEN ESCAPE A “BABY” Austin car, the proA perty of Mrs. M. A. Shelmerdine, of 5 Bel! Street, Remuera, has been stolen twice in three weeks by joyriders.
Last evening two young men took the car from the grounds of St. David’s Church, Khyber Pass, soon after 7.15 o’clock. About 10 o’clock the joyriders almost collided with a bus in Park Road, near the Domain, and in swerving across the street the car overturned.
The two young men who were in the car smashed the glass sides of the car, crawled through, and ran away down Park Road. The bus driver thought their behaviour rather unusual, and informed the police. The Austin was badly damaged, the hood being almost torn off, and the glass all smashed.
About three weeks ago Mrs. Shelmerdine left her car outside the Unity Hall, in Queen Street. It was taken by joyriders, and found later in the Civic Square. The car on that occasion was not damaged.
