“AN OUTSIDE REFEREE”
A.F.A. REGISTERS PROTEST When a telegram was received at the meeting of the A.F.A., held last evening, stating that Mr. G. Cox, Hamilton, had been appointed for the test match, and Mr. L. C. H. Dawson for the match against Auckland, the members strongly protested against the action of the Xew Zealand Council in appointing an outside referee. Mr. T. G. Wilkes, in expressing the opinion of the Auckland Referees’ Association, stated that the appointment of an outside man for the test was considered a slur on the qualifications of local officials. He thought that the management committee should enter a strong protest. Mr. Dawson intimated that he was in an unenviable position in being selected to control the match between Canada and Auckland, in view of the fact that he was secretary of the Auckland Football Association. If members desired it, he was prepared to withdraw his nomination. It was resolved to telegraph the Xew Zealand Council protesting against an outside appointment when local referees had been appointed at all other centres. It was also decided to suggest that Mr. E. Parkinson be given control of the game.
