DEATH OF PIONEER
MR. E. FITNESS A pioneer of 77 years standing, Mr. Ebenezer Fitness, died at his residence, Drury, on Sunday, at the age of 84. Coming to New Zealand in the ship Eden at the age of seven, Mr. Fitness, together with his parents, landed at New Plymouth. They stayed in Taranaki for some time, being there when the war with the natives broke out. The family later took up land in the Karaka and Razorback districts, near Drury. Mr Fitness was engaged in building work in Auckland when a young man, and in 1870 he married Miss E. Wells, a member of a well-known Auckland family. He erected the Mount Eden Baptist Church. He returned to Taranaki about 38 years ago, and was for some years in business as a builder and cabinetmaker at Opunake. He was later engaged in farming near Hawera and Eltham. About 15 years ago he retired and lived at Green Lane, later removing to Wiri. He has resided at Drury for the past seven years. Mr. Fitness is survived by his wife, four sons and five daughters.
