LAST OF “THE SIX HUNDRED”

MILITARY FUNERAL

The funeral of Troop-Sergeant-Mujor Edwin Hughes, who was the last survivor of the GOO who took part in the charge of the Light Brigade in the Crimean War, took place at Blackpool cemetery last month. It was of an impressive character, with full military honours. Five trumpeters of the dead man’s own regiment, the 13th Hussars, journeyed specially from Edinburgh. Others present included Major-General Moore, commanding the 42nd East Lancashire Division, Major Keith, D.A.A.Q.M.G., of the East Lancashire area, and local officers and ex-service men. The Mayor of Blackpool, Mr. R. Henton. and members of the council, and other public officials also attended. The coffin was borne on a gun carriage, and at the head of the procession was the band of the 88th Brigade R.A.
