“AIDA” LECTURE BY MR. J. M. PRENTICE
A GRAMOPHONE EVENING The Operatic Society’s Hall in Grafton Road proved far too small to accommodate the gathering that assembled last evening for the “Aida” recital given under the auspices of the Auckland Gramophone Society. Apart from the interest at present attached to “Aida,” in view of its forthcoming presentation by the Auckland Choral Society, an additional attraction was the farewell appearance of Mr. J. M. Prentice, late official announcer of IYA, who gave a very instructive and interesting address on the work.
Having seen the opera performed on no less than 14 occasions, Mr. Prentice was able to give a very interesting account of the performances of some of the world’s most famous artists.
The address was illustrated with a varied selection of 13 records, which were followed with close attention by a very appreciative audience.
At the conclusion of the address, Mr. C. B. Plummer, president, on behalf of the society, presented Mr. Prentice with a New Zealand travelling rug.
The first half of the programme was devoted to a short lecture by Mr. Frank I. Ryan, of THE SUN staff, who illustrated an address on “The Middle Course in Music” with an entertaining selection of songs and ballads.
Hearty votes of thanks to both lecturers were carried unanimously.
