AIR FORCE FLIERS CAUSE OF CASUALTIES By Cable. —Press Association. —Copyright Reed. 11.35 a.m. LONDON, Friday. Light was thrown on the cause of Air Force casualties by Lord Thomson, ex-Minister fob Air, in a speech at Guildford. He emphasised that civil flying is far safer than walking on the streets of London. It is in the military that flying risks are taken and accidents occur. “Young fellows have to be trained to do feats that no commercial pilot is called on to perform.” he said. “The Air Force gets men between the ages of 15 and 16. They are the most high-spirited, reckless young devils who ever stepped. They would break their necks on the road if they did not do so in airplanes. The more highspirited and the more reckless a boy is the greater asset is he to the nation if we have to undertake air fighting. If the present machines were fully used, we could in ten hops reach the uttermost part of the Dominions in about 16 days. Think what that means to the people of the backblocks of Australia and New Zealand, and how it would strengthen the ties of kinship.”—A. and N.Z.
